Basque separatists

Modified 18 Jan 2003

There is a variety of groups on either side: Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), Basque Fatherland and Liberty, is a violent group claiming to be in favor of Basque autonomy. Founded in 1959 with aim of an independent Marxist Basque homeland in the Spanish-French border area (northern Spanish Provinces of Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa, Alava, and Navarra; and south-west French Departments of Labourd, Basse-Navarra, and Soule).
