Almurabeton,
Al-Jama'ah Al-Islamiyyah,
and
Hizb Al-Ikhwan Al-Muslimoon
(Muslim Brotherhood Movement or
Islamic Group) --
Hard-line Islamist anti-government movement(s) funded by
Osama bin Laden (also see
the al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden section).
They may be the same organization,
at the very least they have parallel goals and support
each other.
Much of the activity has been centered around Assyut.
They operate mainly in the Al-Minya, Assyut, Qina,
and Sohaj Governates of southern Egypt, and have
support in Cairo and Alexandria, particularly among
students and unemployed graduates.
World-wide presence in the U.K., Afghanistan, Yemen,
and Austria.
Behind the massacre of tourists at Luxor in
November 1997, earlier sporadic attacks on trains,
and an assassination attempt on President Mubarak
in 1995.
Since words usually with a ``j'' sound in other
Arabic dialects
(e.g., jebel, meaning ``mountain'') have
a ``g'' sound (gebel) in the Egyptian dialect,
and since spelling Arabic words with the Roman
character set is usually an approximation at best,
these may be spelled in various ways.
Al-murabeton were the Arab and Berber
warriors that conquered Spain in the 700's.
