Kurdistan

The Kurdish people live in a region overlapping south-eastern Turkey, northern Syria and Iraq, and north-western Iran. There's confusing diversity, made harder to understand by the tendancy by some to label similar Kurdish groups ``Freedom Fighters'' or ``Terrorists'' based on which side of the Iraqi-Turkish border they're on....

  • PKK -- Partiya Karkaren Kurdistan (Kurdish Workers' Party) -- KADEK (Kurdistan Freedom and Democracy) the Kurdish group we hear the most about in the U.S. PKK founded in 1974 as a Marxist-Leninist insurgent group. In April 2002 they changed their name to KADEK (Congress for Freedom and Democracy in Kurdistan)

  • Med-TV -- PKK's satellite broadcasting program. Turkey wants the UK, where Med-TV is based, to do something about it. At times the UK does, shutting down Med-TV for three weeks in March 1999 after a broadcast called for violence in Turkey (Reuters, 17 March 1999). http://www.med-tv.be/med/
